Salutations my dear reader, I am the Aloof Nerd– adventurer, computer geek, ex model, sailor, diver, and historian.  For the last five years of my life I have been a constant nomad, sailing the Caribbean for years on a classic sailboat, my life turned upside down by two hurricanes and an additional life catastrophe.  My travels have brought me all over the islands, Europe, South East Asia, and the list will continue to grow.

Currently, I am in Egypt working on my Master’s Thesis :

“Effective Management of Archaeological and Historic Shipwreck Sites of the Red Sea, Egypt.”

The past few years, I have dedicated my efforts towards my education and scuba diving– this unique mix has enabled me an opportunity to see some of the world’s most amazing heritage sites all while enjoying the wonders of the Red Sea.  I hope you will enjoy my blog, I do not update my website too often, but you can find me active on all of my social media platforms.

A provocative perspective

I have a taste for provocative ideas, intriguing art work, literature which feeds the mind, food which feeds the soul, and a wide assortment of other random hobbies and interests.  Opinionated and beautiful, I have come to recognize the immensity of the world and my place within it; a story teller, a lover, a friend, a nerd.

A graduate of College of Charleston, my focus was on history and classics; my mind was constantly yearning for more information and I happily fed that muscle of mine for four years before I jumped on a sailboat with my ex -and sailed off into the unknown.  For years I was a successful model and funded my travels with my online business and doing free lance tech work.

While diving with Sea Queen Fleet off the coast of Sharm el-Sheikh a pod of dolphins appeared out of nowhere and spent 30 minutes swimming and playing with us-- joyful whistles emitted from every angle. This was an out of this world experience and one of my best dives.

🌊 Dive into the captivating world of scuba diving with me @aloofnerd! 🤿📸

On a recent adventure in #Dahab, I had the incredible opportunity to witness a Red Sea puffer fish gracefully gliding through the turquoise waters. 🐡✨ Did you know that puffer fish are known for their unique defense mechanism? When threatened, they inflate themselves by swallowing water or air, making them appear larger and deterring predators. So don’t scare a puffer fish as their defense mechanism can cause them harm. 🐠💨

Follow Me as I explore the underwater wonders of Dahab with @MirageDivers, my go-to scuba shop in this enchanting destination! 🏝️🌊

💙 Diving alongside these fascinating creatures and uncovering the hidden treasures that lie beneath the surface is one of the best parts about scuba diving. 🐚✨

Unleashing my inner explorer, I’ve made my childhood dreams come true and standing here at the heart of “Om El Donia” in the ruins of Abu Simbel is proof of that. The journey from dreaming to living my wildest dreams has been nothing short of magical. Being inspired by museums as a child, I yearned to explore Egypt, and now, after almost 4 years in the country, I can say that I have truly lived in the cradle of civilization. From the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, up the Nile, every moment has been an adventure that feels like a movie, but it’s my reality. If you’re wondering how to make your dreams come true, let me tell you that it’s possible.

As I arrived at Abu Simbel, I was immediately struck by the massive statues of Pharaoh Ramses II guarding the entrance. The intricate carvings and hieroglyphics that adorned the walls of the temple complex were a testament to the incredible craftsmanship of the ancient Egyptians.

As I ventured deeper into the temple, I was fascinated by the stories depicted on the walls, showcasing scenes from ancient Egyptian mythology and history. The inner sanctuary, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, was particularly awe-inspiring with its beautiful reliefs and paintings.

Stepping out onto the terrace, I was greeted by stunning views of Lake Nasser, shimmering in the desert sun. The serene waters provided a breathtaking backdrop to the temple’s imposing facade, creating a truly magical sight.

As a history enthusiast, I was captivated by the significance of Abu Simbel in ancient Egyptian culture and religion. It was a humbling experience to stand in a place that has stood the test of time for thousands of years.

I left Abu Simbel with a sense of wonder and awe, and a deep appreciation for the ancient Egyptians’ architectural achievements. It was an unforgettable journey into the past, and I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to witness the splendor of Abu Simbel Temple.

Join me as I continue to explore the world and share my travel adventures. Follow along for more insights, stories, and breathtaking moments from my journeys.

The most beautiful and ancient view Alexandria, Egypt. This is the site of the Famous Lighthouse Of Alexandria. Although the famed lighthouse of antiquity disappeared around the 14thC, the site was reused for military defenses and is now a modern day tourist attraction for people visiting Alexandria.
.
sometimes called the Pharos of Alexandria, was a lighthouse built by the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus. While conflicting accounts inhibit a complete understanding of exactly how the Lighthouse LOOKED, we can estimate it was roughly 100 metres in overall height. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and portions of it still remain in the bay while other sections were repurposed for the citadel, which was a common practice at the time.
.
Today, Qait Bay Citadel (as seen in the reel) is a beautiful fort which finished construction in 1479 CE. Mameluke Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay fortified the place as part of his coastal defenses against the Turks, who were threatening Egypt at that time. He built the fortress and placed a mosque inside it. The Citadel continued to function during most of the Mameluke period, the Ottoman period and the Modern period, but after the British bombardment of Alexandria in 1882, it was kept out of the spotlight. It became neglected until the 20th century, when it was restored several times by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities.
.
If you’re in Alexandria, I recommend a trip to the citadel; the architecture remains some of my favorite in the ancient city.

The Temple of Hathor at Abu Simbel was built by Ramesses II (c. 1279-1213 B.C.E.) to honor both Hathor as the goddess of love/music and his wife Nefertari as a deified queen. The facade, resembling a pylon, has six standing colossal statues (30+ ft high). The statues feature Ramses and Nefertari, with some of their many children by their side. Nefertari is depicted as the goddess Hathor, and is, unusually, portrayed as the same height as her husband (instead of knee-height, as most consorts were depicted).
.
.
Step inside and witness the breathtaking pillars of the hypostyle hall in Egypt, each crowned with bovine-shaped Hathor capitals. The walls are adorned with colorful scenes of the queen honoring her husband, alongside the gods and Ramses II. The vestibule and adjoining chambers are just as impressive, featuring vivid depictions of the goddess and her sacred barque. The art in this temple is soft and graceful, making it a must-see destination for any art lover visiting Egypt. Don’t miss out on experiencing the rich history and beauty of Egypt’s temples!

• Daedalus Reef and Lighthouse.
Daedalus Reef is a 400-meter-long and 100-meter-wide
standalone reef in the Egyptian Red Sea, about 90 kilometers East of Marsa Alam.
Originally built in 1863, a small artificial island in the center of the reef, hosts a lighthouse which was rebuilt in 1931.
Daedalus reef is renowned for diving because of the strong probability of seeing pelagic fish, such as hammerhead sharks, and an abundance of bright and healthy corals. In the high season one can find many dive safari boats staying overnight, anchored to the reef. The site is a popular attraction and its preservation is important not only due to the abundance of marine life, but also to ensure sustainable tourism in the Red Sea.

The Thistlegorm is believed to be one of the best shipwreck dive sites in the world; however it is also a maritime grave for the 9 sailors who lost their lives when the ship was attacked by Luftwaffe aircraft in 1941. Today, at the depth of 25-32 m, the wreck is an underwater museum, a large draw for Egypt’s Red Sea Tourism, and a place to reconnect with our shared cultural heritage. Due to its extensive history and encompassing history, this shipwreck remains one of my favorite to visit, dive, and to study.
